Cabinet Hinge Identification & Measurement Field Reference

Use this sheet at the cabinet before searching for an old hinge or ordering a new one. Record the installed assembly—not just its logo or a cup stamp. The drawings are original schematics, not drilling templates.

What to record

Evidence to record from the installed hinge
DetailHow to check itWhy it matters
Cabinet constructionFace-frame: a wood frame surrounds the opening. Frameless: the cabinet side is the mounting surface.Determines the cabinet-side mounting arrangement.
Hinge mounting styleRecord concealed/European, semi-concealed or surface-mounted; photograph the complete hinge open and closed. These styles are not interchangeable merely because a dimension matches.
Cup and fixingFor a concealed hinge, measure bore diameter across the hole, then door screw centers separately; note screw-on or press-in fixing. A 35 mm cup is common, not universal.Cup size and hole pattern are separate fit constraints.
OverlayWith the door closed, mark its outer edge. Open it; measure from that mark to the cabinet opening edge. Record inset separately.Overlay changes the hinge/plate configuration.
Arm geometryNote straight, half-cranked or full-cranked arm; photograph its side profile.Useful identification evidence, not proof of replacement compatibility.
Mounting plateRecord separate plate versus integrated/one-piece face-frame mounting, complete plate marking, hole count and existing frame-hole spacing.A plate number and one-hole/two-hole geometry can determine the documented replacement route.
Opening angleRecord the approximate fully-open angle when known.Supporting evidence and a clearance check; it is not always needed for family identification.
Stamped numbersPhotograph and transcribe all cup, arm and plate markings separately.A stamp may be a component, casting, production or plate number—not necessarily an orderable part number.

Five measurement sketches

Measure closed-door overlayFront-view schematic: the closed door edge lies left of the cabinet opening edge. The distance between those edges is the overlay.door edgeopening edgeOVERLAY
01 / Overlay. Close the door, mark its outside edge on the frame, then open it and measure from that mark to the opening edge. Do not measure the gap between doors.
Measure the cup bore diameterBack-of-door schematic showing a circular hinge cup and a diameter line through its center. Thirty-five millimeters is a common reference, not a universal size.CUP ØExample reference: 35 mm
02 / Cup diameter. Measure across the circular bore in the door, not across the metal cup flange. A 35 mm bore is common for concealed hinges, but it does not identify a replacement.
Measure door-side screw-hole spacingBack-of-door view of a cup with two fixing-hole centers. The arrow runs from the center of the left fixing hole to the center of the right one.CENTER TO CENTER
03 / Cup-hole pattern. Record the center-to-center distance between door fixing holes and whether the hinge is screw-on or press-in. Do not infer this spacing from cup diameter.
Compare schematic hinge arm profilesThree side profiles are labeled straight, half-cranked, and full-cranked. Their bends differ; the drawing is not to scale or a fit template.STRAIGHTHALF-CRANKEDFULL-CRANKED
04 / Arm shape. Note straight, half-cranked or full-cranked geometry. It helps identify the installation but never proves that another hinge will reuse the same mounting holes.
Record cabinet-side mounting plate and hole countA separate two-hole cabinet-side plate is shown with both frame-side hole centers and a plate-code area. Compare it with an integrated one-piece mounting before choosing a replacement.PLATE CODEFRAME-SIDE HOLES: COUNT + SPACING
05 / Plate and frame holes. Photograph the complete plate marking and count/measure existing frame-side holes. A one-hole plate, two-hole plate and integrated hinge can require different installation work.

Useful conversions when recording overlay: 6.35 mm = 1/4 in; 12.7 mm = 1/2 in; 19.05 mm = 3/4 in; 25.4 mm = 1 in; 31.75 mm = 1-1/4 in; 34.925 mm = 1-3/8 in; 38.1 mm = 1-1/2 in. These are measurement equivalents, not suggested hinge matches.

Identification is not compatibility

Matching cup diameter, overlay, or appearance alone does not prove that two hinges are direct replacements. A family name or familiar marking can narrow identification; replacement status needs evidence about the exact configuration and installation. Record the door-side and cabinet-side screw-hole geometry before deciding whether new drilling is acceptable.

DIRECT REPLACEMENT
Critical mounting geometry and existing holes are reusable with no structural modification.
COMPATIBLE REPLACEMENT
Requires an associated replacement component such as a mounting plate, clip, spacer or adapter, but no structural modification.
RETROFIT REPLACEMENT
Requires new holes, repositioning, spacer/adapter modification or other installation changes.
NO VERIFIED MATCH
The available evidence does not justify a specific replacement recommendation; it does not prove that no replacement exists.

For bounded examples, see the seven verified COMPACT 33 two-hole configurations and the eight verified Grass 830 retrofit configurations. Neither reference applies to an unlisted plate or a generic family stamp.

Print-and-write field sheet

Use one sheet per distinct hinge/door configuration. Photograph the old assembly before removing it.

Reference basis

This measurement framework uses the site's documented hinge identification guide and manufacturer examples: Blum COMPACT 33 specifications and plate chart, Blum replacement instructions, Grass replacement chart, Grass 830 installation sheet, and Blum's marking/identification guidance. Manufacturer drawings were not copied. This independent field sheet is for recording evidence, not certifying an unlisted replacement.
